How noise reduction works
Sound is cut by mass, by air gaps and by breaking up resonance. Acoustic units use thicker or laminated glass, asymmetric pane thicknesses and sometimes a wider cavity so the two panes do not 'sing' at the same frequency. The frame seals matter too, which is where a well-fitted aluminium system helps.

How much difference
A jump of even a few Rw decibels is clearly audible. For a busy road, an asymmetric laminated unit in a well-sealed frame transforms a room. The gain is largest when the whole opening — glass and seals — is upgraded together.
Security bonus
Laminated acoustic glass is harder to break through, so you often get an acoustic and a security upgrade in one — see security standards and U-values for the thermal side, since acoustic units are usually good insulators too.
Specifying it
Tell your supplier the noise source and direction so they can spec the right asymmetric build-up rather than just 'thicker glass'. Suppliers handling premium glazing systems will quote a specific Rw for your configuration.
